The hotel represents the 11th hotel either acquired or under contract to purchase by Chatham since its 21 April 2010 initial public offering.

"This is a very well-located property with superb visibility and accessibility off of the Long Island Expressway," says Jeffrey H. Fisher, Chatham's chief executive officer. "The Long Island hotel market is extremely attractive for a number of reasons, including its high barriers to new competition and multiple demand generators. This hotel is proximate to a large number of major businesses, as well as to such nearby tourist attractions as Fire Island and the Hamptons, which appeals to both business and leisure travellers."

The upscale extended-stay Residence Inn by Marriott hotel features 124 suites, complimentary high speed internet access and fully equipped kitchens. The hotel offers an on-site fitness centre, indoor swimming pool and whirlpool, as well as an outdoor sport court.

The six-year-old hotel will be managed by Island Hospitality Management, a hotel management company 90 per cent owned by Fisher

Move-ins at the W New York Downtown Hotel & Residences are slated for Sunday, according to the New York Post.

The 58-story building at 123 Washington Street in the Financial District -- which has 223 condos -- sits atop a 217-room hotel operated by Starwood's W brand, which opened Tuesday..

The Moinian Group, the building's developer, initially put the condos on the market in 2007, pre-construction. But in the down market, Moinian put sales on hold and waited until the building was further built and the economy had "recovered," the Post said.

Just one year after undergoing a downturn, New York City's tourism industry looks to be on the rebound.

The city's marketing and tourism agency says preliminary data shows New York is on track to reach a record 47.5 million visitors this year – beating the previous record set in 2008 by 500,000.

This comes after tourism fell for the first time in eight years in 2009, as the country went through a recession and Americans reigned in spending.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg says the industry fared better across all sectors – from higher hotel occupancy rates and Broadway ticket sales to more tourism-related jobs than last year.

"Just think about that, the economy turns down in America and around the world, and we're gonna have a record year in tourism,” said the mayor. “We used to talk about diversifying our economy, not just diversification in terms of industries, but around the city and all five boroughs. This is another example of doing exactly that."

Deadline looms for proposals to turn seven floors of the long-vacant mid-block building into a high-end hostelry; owner Africa-Israel hopes to turn top four floors into luxury condos

Bids are due by mid August from companies interested in setting up a hotel on seven floors of the old New York Times building on West 43rd Street between Seventh and Eighth avenues.

“We want something that is the kind of brand that fits the space,” said Richard Marin, the chairman and chief executive of owner Africa Israel Investments (USA), which plans to turn the long-empty building into a multi-use property with shops, hotel rooms and luxury condominiums. “This is an iconic landmark building that wouldn't be right for a down-market brand.”

By the end of this summer, more than a half-dozen new hotels will have opened in the Big Apple. And Smith Travel Research reported that 46 hotels are scheduled to open in New York City this year.

I think hotels in Manhattan will do well, but I'm worried about the outer boroughs, with the exception of Downtown Brooklyn, Cobble Hill and Dumbo. With so many new hotels of all price points in Manhattan, who wants to schlep to hotels in Long Island City and the Bronx to go to a rooftop bar and then rest their head? They will likely only travel to the outer borough hotels with a mission to save money, but they can find the same price points in Manhattan.

Last month, Hyatt Hotels' 184-room Andaz opened at 485 Fifth Avenue at 41st Street in the former Rogers, Peet & Company Department Store, directly across the street from the New York Public Library. The hotel is the home of the "The Shop" a 38-seat restaurant on the ground floor using food from New York state farms and local purveyors.

Times Square just welcomed the 607-room InterContinental Hotel Times Square. The development is the largest ground-up hotel in Manhattan in eight years. In the base of the building, at 300 West 44th Street at the corner of Eighth Avenue, is a recently opened Shake Shack.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - It took nearly three months to find the perfect hue of slate blue for the bathroom towels at the InterContinental New York Times Square hotel.

The hotel's general manager, Drew Schlesinger, held each sample against the bathroom tiles to see how well the colors meshed. He dimmed the lights to see how that would alter the tones. He sent the towels back seven times to be re-dyed until they finally came up with the perfect shade.

"Details are extremely important," he said, just before a walk-through of the hallways of the InterContinental, which is still under construction. "You get enough people to have that 'Aha!' moment and it's a home run."

It is gospel in the hospitality industry that the small stuff matters. The curve of the door knob, the heft of a closet hanger and a coffee mug that's just the right size can go a long way in convincing a hotel guest to become a regular customer.
